Me and my brother bought our first vending machine when I was 13.
We had saved up around $3,000 from working jobs after school. We always loved selling and we figured vending was something we could scale. So we put a machine in an office and that was it.
For the first year and a half we barely covered expenses. Some months we didn't even cover the cost of the machine. We were stocking it ourselves, doing everything ourselves, and honestly thinking there was no way to make real money in this business.
Then we watched a YouTube video that said something simple: with vending, you either go big or you go home. One machine isn't gonna do it. We had to either shut it down or go all in. We went all in.
After school, me and my brother started Ubering to office buildings and pitching property managers on why vending made sense for them. Free samples, showing the machines, working the warehouse — we ran the whole thing ourselves. Four months later we landed our first real contract. It was a big real estate portfolio, and we ended up walking out with a deal for one machine in every one of their 10 buildings.
We had maybe $6,000 to our name — not close to enough for 10 machines. We took out a loan, got them placed, and worked them for the next six months. Slowly, we started actually making money. We ordered more.
By that point I was 15 and my brother was 16. We drove around and locked in another 15 locations. Then we made the call: we ordered 35 more machines for those 15 locations. We were either gonna make it work or go bankrupt.
For the next three months we did nothing but find locations. Every machine got placed. We hired our first employee. That's when it actually took off.
We knew the locations we wanted — government, Jewish schools, big warehouses, big offices — so we went after them. We got our first 1,000-unit residential building. Then we secured the largest Jewish school in Florida. Then a 500-employee national office. Then government contracts.
I'd been doing sales for about a year by then, and the thing I cared about was simple: if you give great service, you're super responsive, and you treat every account like it's your own — there's no reason you shouldn't be the best in your market.
